Meet the Locals, Feel the Culture

Taiko training in Tokyo

Feel the pulse of Japan as guests learn the dynamic rhythms of taiko drumming from professional instructors in an energetic, hands-on workshop in the heart of Tokyo.

Join in with a local festival

Step into the heart of community life by joining unforgettable local festivals, from the fire-swinging spectacle of Kakunodate’s Hi no Kami Firefuri to the spirited traditions of Kanuma’s own autumn festival.

Kosher friendly soba making

Join local experts in Kanuma to learn the art of handcrafting soba noodles inside a historic building.

Pottery making with a Living National Treasure

Shape porcelain alongside a true master at the Manji Inoue Kiln in Arita, where guests meet and learn from a Living National Treasure in the birthplace of Japanese ceramics.

Traditional outdoor cooking with locals

Gather around the hearth and prepare seasonal dishes using age-old methods as friendly locals share stories, recipes, and the joy of open-air cooking in nature.

Hayashi taiken in Kanuma

Dress in traditional festival attire and climb aboard Kanuma’s iconic yatai floats. Guests will learn local festival songs and try their hand at the powerful drums that bring the celebration to life.

Local connections and immersion

Unlike many travel companies who are based in big cities like Tokyo or Osaka, we are based in the regional area of Kanuma, Tochigi Prefecture. While only about an hour outside of Tokyo, Kanuma is like a different world, where mountains tower in the background and rice paddies abound.

Our guests visit not only Nikko, home to the famous Nikko Toshogu Shrine, but they truly explore our home region of Japan. We arrange after hours meals in a secluded bamboo forest, filled with the warm glow of illuminated bamboo lanterns, or take them for sake tasting in a brewery dating back hundreds of years.

We have worked with the local people of Kanuma to offer countryside cycling tours, an exclusive festival experience inside the yatai Kaikan (festival float) museum, where guests can don yukata and drum on the taiko drums as if they were part of Kanuma’s renowned autumn festival. We send guests to try their hand at Kumiko (a traditional woodworking technique) with the few remaining legends who still practice this craft.

Flexible and Adaptable

At A Touch of Japan, we aim to exceed expectations by staying flexible and adaptable in everything we do. Our priority is to shape each journey around the unique needs of our guests, ensuring every experience is not only satisfying but truly exceptional.
We also understand the importance of dietary needs and are well-versed in arranging meals for guests who follow:
• Kosher diets
• Halal diets
• Gluten free diets
• Vegetarian or vegan diets
• Pescatarian diets

Sept/Oct 2024 a perfectly organized amazing boutique tour for two couples with private guide (in Hebrew & English) and driver for 22 days and 13 hotels was a trip of a lifetime. We visited over 94 sites and locations that we would never have done on our own and it was all stress-free. All issues that we had were immediately addressed in the best possible way. Kol hakavod! Words cannot express how wonderful it all was.

We were fortunate to have you as our guide on our first trip to Japan. We greatly enjoyed your vast knowledge, your connection and love for the country, its culture, and language, as well as your pleasant demeanor and honesty. We thank you very much for two wonderful weeks in which you opened a window for us to this fascinating and beautiful country. Hoping to meet again in the future.

We came back from an amazing trip to Japan, guided by Shmulik and lead by Oren. The both of them knew how to guide us through experiences from another world. There's no doubt that a trip to Japan is a special one and Itay and his team know how to plan, organize, lead and execute a high-leveled eventful tour.
Thank you

A whole year was spent planning the trip to Japan. Complex logistics and continuous communication with the company 'A Touch of Japan.' Finally, after accommodating the preferences of each group member, a perfect itinerary was achieved. History, culture and tradition, temples and skyscrapers, parks and gardens. It’s hard to describe everything we saw and experienced in Japan, Mount Fuji, hot springs, and more... and more... This was a boutique trip.
